PRESS RELEASE.

The Printed Room at SALTS presents Your Palindrome, Her Abecedarium, selections from a private library presented in palindromic form. Traditionally a complete alphabet noted in stone or a primer-like book, the abecedary was first located in its ecclesiastical employment and environment. A non-printed encyclopedia notes that “Abecedaries are generally considered to be medieval teaching aids, particularly for the illiterate.” Also that the alphabet “may have been thought to possess supernatural powers along the lines of the runic alphabet. Each letter would have had a symbolic meaning to the devout.” So they do. Learn your letters here via volumes by Ai, Joseph Brodsky, Anne Carson, Marguerite Duras, Paul Éluard, Peter Handke, Clarice Lispector, Gerard Malanga, Robert Musil, and others.

The Printed Room is a parallel program at SALTS consisting of changing exhibitions of printed material and a series of literary-minded readings, lectures, concerts, and performances.
